From Backyard Prototypes to Amazon Bestseller

Bella Lin's entrepreneurial journey began at a young age, with her father's encouragement and guidance. As a child, she experimented with various side hustles, from lemonade stands to selling hand-knit scarves. Her father, a computer programmer with start-up experience, fostered Lin's entrepreneurial spirit, often engaging her in discussions about business and pricing strategies.One such conversation led to the creation of TLeggings, another of Lin's successful side ventures that brought in 0,000 at its peak in 2020. This early exposure to entrepreneurship and her father's mentorship laid the foundation for Lin's future success with GuineaLoft.

Designing a Better Guinea Pig Cage

The idea for GuineaLoft was born out of Lin's personal frustration with the tedious task of cleaning her guinea pig cages. As a 12-year-old, she spent an hour every week "scraping, scrubbing and power washing" the excrement from her two guinea pig cages, which she described as a "mini porta potty." This experience prompted Lin to design her own cages, starting with sketches on notebook paper and eventually building prototypes in her backyard using bricks and plastic.Lin's innovative design features acrylic walls and a disposable wax-coated paper bottom, making the cages easier to clean and maintain. After about a year of prototyping, Lin launched the GuineaLoft cages on Amazon in November 2022, with the first batch selling out within two weeks.

Rapid Growth and Expansion

The success of GuineaLoft's signature cages has been nothing short of remarkable. In 2023, the company has brought in roughly ,000 a month in revenue, more than double the ,000 in average monthly revenue it generated the previous year. The company has also seen a significant increase in profitability, earning nearly ,600 in monthly profit.Lin credits this explosive growth to a pivotal event – winning ,000 from a pitching competition at BizWorld, a project-based entrepreneurship program. With the funds, Lin was able to purchase an acrylic laser cutter, which dramatically sped up production times and kept the signature cages in stock.GuineaLoft has since expanded its product line, offering a range of accessories for guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, and birds, including hay feeders and no-drip water bottles. The company now employs six full-time workers to develop, build, and test its products.

Balancing Entrepreneurship and College

Despite the success of GuineaLoft, Lin has chosen to continue her education, recently graduating from high school and planning to attend the University of Chicago in the fall, where she will study economics. She currently dedicates around 30 hours per week to running the business as a side hustle, while also taking two college courses.Lin's decision to pursue higher education while maintaining GuineaLoft reflects her long-term vision for the company. She has not yet started paying herself a salary, instead reinvesting the profits back into the business. Her ultimate goal is to expand GuineaLoft's reach, with plans to get the products on brick-and-mortar shelves in the near future.
