Californians Urged to Curb Grilling Amid Wildfire Smoke Concerns

As wildfires continue to rage in California, air quality officials are taking proactive measures to protect public health. In the Riverside County area, elevated fine particle pollution levels from wildfire smoke have prompted a call for residents to avoid grilling food and minimize other indoor air pollution sources.

The Eagle Fire, which ignited in Riverside County on Sunday afternoon, has since spread to over 1,600 acres. As of Monday morning, the blaze was 50 percent contained. However, the smoke from the fire has had a significant impact on the local air quality, prompting the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) to issue an air quality alert on Sunday night.

Elevated Particle Pollution Levels

The air quality alert, which is scheduled to remain in place until 2 p.m. local time on Monday, was issued after the AQMD detected unhealthy air quality levels in parts of Riverside County. According to a map posted on the former Twitter platform, the most impacted areas include San Bernardino, Riverside, and east of Los Angeles.

Recommendations to Mitigate Air Pollution

In response to the poor air quality, the South Coast AQMD has issued a series of recommendations to help residents minimize their exposure to the harmful pollutants. These include avoiding burning wood in fireplaces or firepits, minimizing indoor air pollution sources such as candles, incense, pan-frying, and grilling, and limiting the use of gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment.

Protecting Vulnerable Populations

The alert also urges people to remain indoors with their doors and windows closed or seek alternative shelter if they smell smoke. For those who must venture outdoors, the AQMD recommends wearing a tightly-fitted N-95 or P-100 respirator to help reduce exposure. The agency also cautions against engaging in vigorous physical activity and advises running air conditioners and/or air purifiers to improve indoor air quality.

Exposure to particle pollution can have serious health consequences, including worsening lung disease, asthma attacks, and acute bronchitis. There is also an increased risk of respiratory infections. In addition to the air quality concerns, San Bernardino is also under a heat advisory, with high temperatures forecast to reach between 100 and 106 degrees Fahrenheit.
